Clutch Cable Detail
The original cluch cable and adjuster on my Wabbit stuck straight up
from the transmission into the space that is now occupied by the front
battery box. I discovered this unfortunate juxtposition only after I had
fabricated and installed the box. This is my solution to the problem.
I clipped the end and about 3" of cable from the stock clutch cable
assembly. (I actually clipped the three inches later, after the all the
other parts were made so I could get the final length exactly right.) I
removed and tossed the original adjuster. I then bent a section of 1/4 inch
steel brake tube to form a long, smooth, 90 degree turn. There is a steel
washer welded to the tube just before it passes through the hole in the
bracket on the transmission. This keeps the tube from pulling through the
hole. I left the flare on one end of the tube for the end of the original
cable housing to bear upon. I cut and reamed the other end of the tube. I
swaged (actually crimped using the remaining jaw area of the $21 crimpers) a
cable end was made from a 1/4-28 allen-head cap screw. The screw has a 1/8
inch dia. ~ 1 inch deep hole drilled in it's center. The "wing-nut" adjuster
is a clutch adjustment nut for an air-cooled VW.
